Module 2 - Considering the online context, create and organize learning outcomes.

The course outcome is to:

Consider the online learning environment and create and organize course outcomes / learning objectives

The purpose of this module is to get you to consider the online environment and what you need to think about as you start planning your online courses. We will be designing our courses with the end in mind. This process starts with you deciding what it is you want students to be able to do or demonstrate by the end of your course. Once we have this we will then work backwards to create course outcomes and module learning objectives which will be aligned with assessments and learning materials.

Learning Objectives

  1. Use the "Understanding by Design " framework and considerations to teaching online, to start planning your online course with the end in mind.
  2. Create course outcomes for your online course using the formula Action Verb +Noun+ Context = Outcome , which clearly articulate what students will be able to do by the end of your course.
  3. Breakdown each course outcome into learning objectives using the formula Action Verb +Noun+ Context = Learning Objective , which clearly articulate what the student will be able to do at the end of the module.

Considering the online context

You have probably heard the terms online, remote and face to face teaching, but what do these terms mean?

Begin with the end in mind - Backward planning

Online courses must be well structured. If you think about it, semesters and credit courses are some of the structures already in place that you work within. You are likely already very familiar with structuring lessons or labs for your face-to face classes. For online courses, structure is even more important. An online course that is well structured steers students through the course, and clearly emphasizes what students are expected to know and do, how they will be assessed and when they have to do it by. A well structured course means that students can find information easily, expectations are clearly defined and there is strong alignment between instruction and assessment.

✍Self-assessment (Pre-course)

This self-assessment rubric has been specifically designed for the ITO course. The criteria in the rubric are all aligned with the course outcomes and module learning objectives.

✍Writing your own course outcomes and learning objectives

Using the information you have learned write between 2- 5 course outcomes for your online course and break them down into between 1 - 3 module learning objectives.
