A6 - Reaction

On this page

In this assignment you're going to be building on the simple facial expression assignment that you completed in A5 - Face Expressions. Create a short animation (minimum 15 seconds) that has two relatively realistic looking characters (this means that they need to have hair, eyebrows, ears, etc. - all the stuff that you'd normally see on a face). The characters can be human or they can be animals or something else, as long as the "face" has some detail and features. In this case, simple round circle isn't sufficient. Each character has to be different. Use the Frame Picker technique that you learned in A5 to create a range of expressions for each character (minimum of 5/character). Once you have created the characters develop a scene where they react to a moving object that enters the scene - use your imagination for this part. It could be a flying bird or insect, it could be something falling from the sky, it could be something completely different.

Key Requirements

  • If you created a detailed Graphic Symbol in A5 you can use that for one of the characters in this assignment.
  • You must have 2 different characters with developed/realistic features.
  • You must use the Frame Picker technique for this assignment.
  • You must have at least 5 expressions/character.
  • You must have a moving object that attracts the characters attention. Note that the characters do not have to move (but their expressions will change depending on what is going on in the scene).
  • You must add a soundtrack to the animation (use the production music in the M drive or source your own).
  • You must have a Title section (3 seconds) and a Credit section (5 seconds).

What to Do

  1. Create a folder in M (Media):\ [INGRAM]\2020\2D Animation\Your Name\A6
  2. Create a new HTML5 Canvas in Adobe Animate, change the size of the Stage from the default to something that is a little larger – 1920 px by 1080 px works well. You might want to save it right away.
  3. Save the .fla file in your student folder.
  4. It might be a good idea to think about, write down, and draw, what is going to happen in the animation before you begin.
  5. Follow the steps in A5 - Face Expressions to create your two Frame Picker characters.
  6. Create a layer for your Title and add a Text object that is visible for 3 seconds (you could label this Title).
  7. Create a layer for each of your Characters (you could label this Char1, Char2).
  8. Create a layer for your sound clip(s). Add a music clip that fits your the length of your movie.
  9. Create a layer(s) for your moving object(s).
  10. Once you have your object moving in the animation, place keyframes in the Character layers where you want your character's expression to change.
  11. Create a layer for your Credits, add a keyframe at the end of your animation and extend this layer for an additional 5 seconds (insert Frame).
  12. Save the edited animation .fla file in your student folder.
  13. Export the animation as a .swf file in the assignment folder.
  14. Put a comment in Canvas that you've completed the assignment.

Pro Tips

  • Label your layers so you know what is on each layer.
  • Name your symbols so that they are easy to identify.
  • For each character layer set the span of time for the entire length of the animation. Then, use the Frame Picker to set the keyframes and changing expressions - it creates the keyframes for you!
