Module 2 - Beyond Basic 2D Animation

At this point you should have a basic understanding of how to draw objects and backgrounds in Animate and how to create simple animations using Motion Tweens.

In this module we'll be digging a bit deeper into the story-telling aspect of animation and creating short films around subjects of your own choice. Concepts explored in this section include: the use of sound; the use of Scenes; frame by frame animation to create realistic movement like walk cycles; and the development of backgrounds. We'll essentially be looking at how to make your animations more complex and realistic by adding more features.

In this module

A4 - Sound Bite

In this assignment we'll use Adobe Animate to create an animation based around a soundbite. You can work with a partner for this project.

A5 - Face Expressions

In this assignment we'll use Adobe Animate to create a character with a series of facial expressions. You'll be using the Looping property for Graphic Symbol and the Frame picker to create the facial expressions.

A6 - Reaction

In this assignment you're going to be building on the simple facial expression assignment that you completed in A5 - Face Expressions. Create a short animation (minimum 15 seconds) that has two relatively realistic looking characters (this means that they need to have hair, eyebrows, ears, etc. - all the stuff that you'd normally see on a face). The characters can be human or they can be animals or something else, as long as the "face" has some detail and features. In this case, simple round circle isn't sufficient. Each character has to be different. Use the Frame Picker technique that you learned in A5 to create a range of expressions for each character (minimum of 5/character). Once you have created the characters develop a scene where they react to a moving object that enters the scene - use your imagination for this part. It could be a flying bird or insect, it could be something falling from the sky, it could be something completely different.

A7 - Walk Cycle

One of the most challenging tasks of an animator is making a walk cycle. Using Adobe Animate, there are a number of different ways to approach this challenge.
